Co-occurring morphologically distinct algae support a diverse associated fauna in the intertidal zone of Araçá Bay, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Vieira,Edson A.; Filgueiras,Heloísa Romeu; Bueno,Marília; Leite,Fosca Pedini Pereira; Dias,Gustavo Muniz.
Abstract Species diversity is regulated by historical, neutral and niche processes, with species tolerance, dispersal and productivity guiding diversity at larger scales, while habitat heterogeneity and biotic interactions acts in smaller scales. In rocky shores, several organisms provide secondary substrates for mobile fauna, with macroalgae being the most abundant and diverse ones. The patchiness promoted by different macroalgae hosts enhances small-scale heterogeneity and may increase and maintain the diversity of the mobile organisms, since there is a close relationship between the associated fauna and its hosts. In this study we selected three morphologically different macroalgae that coexist in the same rocky shore height in the Araçá Bay, an area...

Nouveaux indices quantitatifs pour le suivi des récifs coralliens issus de modélisation 3D par photogrammétrie ArchiMer
Urbina-barreto, Isabel.
Habitat structural complexity plays a key role in the dynamics and resilience of coral reef communities. The critical situation of coral reef ecosystems beseeches a rapid improvement of monitoring tools to assist in the implementation of efficient conservation measures. Today, new reef assessment technologies support researchers and managers to collect information safer, faster, and with greater accuracy. Among them, photogrammetry by Structure-from-Motion (SfM) creates three-dimensional models and reef zone maps from overlapping images to conduct quantitative surveys of benthic communities. This thesis addressed four objectives: 1) define underwater photogrammetry protocols to create 3D models of coral colonies and reefscapes, in order to conduct physical...

Quantifying the shelter capacity of coral reefs using photogrammetric 3D modeling: From colonies to reefscapes ArchiMer
Urbina-barreto, Isabel; Chiroleu, Frédéric; Pinel, Romain; Fréchon, Louis; Mahamadaly, Vincent; Elise, Simon; Kulbicki, Michel; Quod, Jean-pascal; Dutrieux, Eric; Garnier, Rémi; Henrich Bruggemann, J.; Penin, Lucie; Adjeroud, Mehdi.
Structural complexity plays a key role in the functioning of coral reef ecosystems. Reef-building corals are major contributors to this complexity, providing shelter and food for numerous invertebrates and fish species. Both structural complexity and shelter capacity of reefscapes are determined by several components such as spurs and grooves, slope, caves and holes, vegetation and coral colonies. Quantifying the shelter capacity from coral colonies to reefscapes is a fundamental step to estimating ecosystem potential to support biodiversity. Here, we applied underwater photogrammetry to quantify shelter volumes provided by individual coral colonies. Overall, 120 3D models of coral colonies from branching, massive, columnar and tabular growth forms were...

Relationships between host plant architecture and gall abundance and survival Rev. Bras. entomol.
Lara,Daniela P.; Oliveira,Lázaro A.; Azevedo,Islaine F. P.; Xavier,Márcia F.; Silveira,Fernando A. O.; Carneiro,Marco Antonio Alves; Fernandes,G. Wilson.
The plant architecture hypothesis predicts that variation in host plant architecture influences insect herbivore community structure, dynamics and performance. In this study we evaluated the effects of Macairea radula (Melastomataceae) architecture on the abundance of galls induced by a moth (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Plant architecture and gall abundance were directly recorded on 58 arbitrarily chosen M. radula host plants in the rainy season of 2006 in an area of Cerrado vegetation, southeastern Brazil. Plant height, dry biomass, number of branches, number of shoots and leaf abundance were used as predicting variables of gall abundance and larval survival. Gall abundance correlated positively with host plant biomass and branch number. Otherwise, no...
